Top Tips & Tricks for Bowling Newbies

Bowling alleys are the new-age coffee shops; this is where you play, unwind, chill, and grab a quick bite. A bowling night with friends is fun especially when it's paired with the rhythmic clatter of pins and high scores and wins.

If you are new to bowling, there is no need to be intimidated. Bowling is a fun sport, and we have some top tips and tricks to make you a bowling buddy that everyone wants on their team.

Gearing Up for Greatness

  • Don’t Focus on the Pins.

As tempting as it can be to look at the pins, concentrate on aiming for the pocket spaces.

  • Finding Your Perfect Fit.

All bowling alleys have balls of different weights. Don’t start with the heavier ones. Start with a weighted one that you can handle with a comfortable hold with your fingers reaching the second knuckle. Ask for help to understand the nuances of the game and our Glitch staff will be more than happy to share a few starters.

  • Shoes Make a Difference.

Normal sports shoes usually have poor traction and lead to slipping which can affect your performance poorly. You can rent bowling shoes at Glitch; these are designed to slide on the approach area which gives you a smoother and more controlled delivery of the ball. This is designed for a consistent release and accuracy.

Mastering the Mechanics

  • Finding Your Stance.

Bowling is about your posture and approach. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, with one foot slightly forward for stability. This position will help your base as you approach the lane.

  • The Approach.

The walk up to the lane is a crucial one for your overall performance. Start slowly by taking comfortable steps and then gradually increase your pace and release the ball. This approach will give you better momentum and accuracy.

  • The Grip.

This is the magic part. Have your fingers in the ball with your thumb resting on top and a slightly loose grip. This will give you a smooth release at the end of your swing.

  • The Swing.

Keep your arm straight and swing the ball back and forth like a pendulum. Imagine you are bowling with your entire body, not just your arm. This will generate more power and consistency in the game.

  • The Release.

When you are about to release the ball at the end of the approach, try to focus on aiming for the pocket space between the 1 and 3 pins or the 2 and 4 pins. This is a sweet spot for maximum pin action. Try to aim for a smooth release with your thumb coming off last for an imparting nice spin on the ball for better control.

Striking Gold. Spare Parts & Beyond

    • Don’t Focus on the Pins.

As tempting as it can be to look at the pins, concentrate on aiming for the pocket spaces.

    • Learn to Convert Spare. Knocking down all ten pins in one throw is a highlight, but mastering spares is essential for a good score. Practice throwing for specific remaining pins- learn techniques for the common 7-10 split, the dreaded baby split (a single pin left in the middle), and others. There are plenty of online tutorials and resources to help you with this.

    • Courtesy & Etiquette.

Bowling these days is a social activity. Be mindful of lane courtesy. Try not to interfere with other players’ throws and wait for your turn. If you are new and need more time to set up your shot, let your fellow bowlers know about this.

Bowling is a fantastic social activity mainly because it's relaxed and fun, with breaks between frames for conversation and laughs. And is a great way to bond with friends, and family, or even meet new people. Glitch makes it even more fun with attractive bowling rates at only AED 29 per game for a person on the weekdays and AED 39 per game for a person on the weekends. So see you at bowling at Glitch!
